PST files RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am transferring data from Exchange mailbox to PST file for long term storage, I written a MAPI based library for it. Now I am trying to get around PST file size restriction, what file size the PST file format supports? Also, I have heard that one can attach multiple PST file to a MAPI profile, so can I attach multiple PST files and data would be distributed among them or I have to write my own code for it? Is there any sample code available?

  • If you are using Outlook 2003 or newer, you can use "MSUPST MS" service instead of :MSPST MS", the max file size is 1.933 GB.

Yes, you can attach multiple PST file to a profiles. It is your responsibility copy the data to teh appropriate PST file, Outlook cannot automatically balances the storage for you.

Can you be a bit more specific? What exactly are you having problems with?

  • That is correct, the Exchange (standalone) version of MAPi only supports the old ANSI PST format.

  • Thanks for the response.

I have not started working on this requirement.  If I understand your response correctly, I have to attach multiple PST files to the MAPI profile, open each file as a MAPI store and balance the size between the files by copying data to each file based on its size (2 GB being the max PST size).  Is my understanding correct?

JFYI, I try to open "MSUPST MS", if I can't I open "MSPST MS", I have run my application on both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010, only service available on both was "MSPST MS".
