SQL Server Express 2008/SSMS Start Failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tried to start SQL Server Management Studio for the first time and got a failure which I don't understand how to resolve.

Below are two Paint captures of the error.  You should note that I installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 after I uninstalled Sql Server 2008 Express R2 (64 bit) because of a visual studio problem during install.  Then I installed Sql Server 2008 Express R2 (64 bit) with SSMS.  All systems are as up-to-date as they can be according to Windows Update.

What do I need to do to start SSMS?  Screen captures follow:

  • Hello Terry,

by the screenshot I guess you used the wrong "Server name" to connect to; you entered "SQLEXPRESS", right?

    Try it with:    (local)\SQLEXPRESS
    as server name
