Points system will soon be totally out of control if posts are marked as answered that aren't.

Question
-
The whole point of having Moderators in forums ought to be that they mark a post in a thread as an answer when the question posted by the Original Poster has been answered in the thread. (It's then a matter of opinion if they should mark one post or several, key is that the original question has been answered if any post in that thread has been marked as an answer).
I am still officially a Moderator in a set of back product SharePoint forums even though I officially gave up what could be described as full-time moderation there a few months ago, and nowadays just restrict myself there to moving posts on that are for the current SharePoint product range. Usually this is done because the thread's title specifies the name of the current product but occasionally I guess from the title that it might be about the new product and open the thread to look.
Now, finally, to the point.
In one such case, as Moderator, I posted a reply that said (only)
---------------------------------------------------------
> I'm developing using VS2010.
For SP 2007 or SP 2010 ?
-----------------------------------------------------
I then set an Alert on the thread so that I could be aware that the poster had come back to inform me whether it was SP 2007 (= leave the thread there) or SP 2010 (= move the thread).
Instead I got an alert saying that my post had been marked as an answer !!

This isn't an isolated example as Microsoft people are marking lots of posts as answers when they are do not answer the question, but it is however an extremely clear example showing that the entire marking system is now out of hand and that threads are getting the famous green arrow totally without justification (and that incidentally the statistics on percentage of questions asked that are answered are highly flawed).

Another way for the points system to get way out of control (and one which seems to be taking off as new Moderators arrive in the forums) is to mark every single reply as an answer. This thread is an example of that http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010general/thread/a59198a4-d675-4bc3-983e-8dbd6e7920c3/?prof=required There is a certain justification to giving the first three posts the "mark as answer" (although I would tend just to mark the Craig Lussiter post, as the one that provided the most thoughtful detail) but the final post is just a cast-off sentence (as a comment to one of the earlier, detailed posts) and is hardly worthy of being marked as an answer.
Later: This
is an even better example. All three posts say "yes you can use (the) same content type". The second adds back the text the user asked as well (so is longer, but is no better an answer) and the first and third are identical and have just that quoted text.
The first reply was three hours before the second and third post. There is absolutely no justification here for marking all three replies.
(Note: as I have Moderator rights there, I've corrected the thread so that only the first post is marked as an answer - all three posts were originally marked as answer by the same MS moderator in the same minute but six days after all three replies were made).

Thanks for this post! I use this forum when I need help beyond VStudio help. When I am here, I like to help those who want to learn what I do all day for the past 17 years, Visual Basic. Well, PersonA asked a question. I gave a response and PersonX gave an alternate response. Not only was PersonX's response not the best solution, they marked their own response as a proposed answer before anyone even replied. I looked at PersonX's activity, and it seems they have marked quite a few items as proposed answers, and they were invloved in the thread. Why would PersonX want to close the thread on the newbiee by proposing their suggestion as the answer?Sunday, November 7, 2010 2:17 AM

> Why would PersonX want to close the thread on the newbiee by proposing their suggestion as the answer?
Some people (typically beginners to the forums) propose as an answer every single post they make because they think that is the point of the propose as answer mark. (You can tell those people by looking at their posting record). They usually stop doing it once they notice that their posts are being equally automatically unproposed.
The majority of people who mark their own posts as answers do so because they think it will encourage a Moderator to "up" the post to Answer status. They are trying to improve their points score because they know that a post marked as an answer generates extra points. (Another version of this is to have a sig that requests people to mark the post as an answer).
In neither of these cases is the intention to close the thread. That's an (for the original poster) unfortunate by-product of the desire for more points.
There have been several long threads here in the past requesting that the ability for people to be able to propose their own posts as answers be removed. It would be a simple code change, but the Microsoft forum people have consistently refused to make that change (perhaps because some Microsoft people - often with more justification - propose their own posts as answers).

> Can you explain how a post of mine got quoted on Nov 27 , 2009 when I supposedly deleted it Nov 23 as spam?
Drew1903 could use NNTP Bridge to access forums. Post will remain in his local nntp client even if you will delete it from the thread.

Just don't want to turn this thread into another offtop.
I lost 2K points "known open will not fix bug". Points system is already out of control.
