Some people (typically beginners to the forums) propose as an answer every single post they make because they think that is the point of the propose as answer mark. (You can tell those people by looking at their posting record). They usually stop doing
it once they notice that their posts are being equally automatically unproposed.
The majority of people who mark their own posts as answers do so because they think it will encourage a Moderator to "up" the post to Answer status. They are trying to improve their points score because they know that a post marked as an answer generates
extra points. (Another version of this is to have a sig that requests people to mark the post as an answer).
In neither of these cases is the intention to close the thread. That's an (for the original poster) unfortunate by-product of the desire for more points.
There have been several long threads here in the past requesting that the ability for people to be able to propose their own posts as answers be removed. It would be a simple code change, but the Microsoft forum people have consistently refused to make that
change (perhaps because some Microsoft people - often with more justification - propose their own posts as answers).
