  • SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 SP2 Server Core or Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core installations.

  • Hello,

Windows Server 2008 Server Core does not support .Net Framework 3.5 which is required by SQL Server 2008. Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core has support for .Net Framework 3.5 but installing SQL Server 2008 is not supported

However, see this article by Joachim (MVP) installing SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Core :

    http://www.nullsession.com/2009/06/02/sql-server-2008-on-server-core-2008-r2/

    Hope this helps.

Last question ... am I able to install core SQL Server 2008 R2 on a fully (non-core only) install of WinServ 2008 R2?

    Thanks again!

  • I want to make sure we are on the same page here with your answer above.

    I can install "CORE" SQL Server 2008 R2 on a fully installed (Non-Core) Windows Server 2008 R2?

  • I guess my first question needs to be ... "Is there a core installation of SS 2K8 R2 similar to a core install of WinServer 2008 R2"?

That being a small footprint installation of SQL that is locked down in many of the same ways as a core install of WinServer.

  • Hello,

There is no SQL Server 2008 R2 Core Edition or Core version.

Maybe you are looking for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition.

    Hope this helps.
