  • General discussion

  • As posted on the Windows Azure Team Blog:

Today we’re pleased to announce a change in pricing for the Windows Azure platform that will provide significant cost savings for customers whose cloud applications experience substantial inbound traffic, and customers interested in migrating large quantities of existing data to the cloud. For billing periods that begin on or after July 1, 2011, all inbound data transfers for both peak and off-peak times will be free.

More information is available in the blog post.

  • This is an important development! While this surely makes any use of the Windows Azure cloud platform better deal overall, it is a real boon for those use cases which involve asymmetric use of bandwidth. In the asymmetric use of bandwidth scenarios, the bulk of the bandwidth use is to get the data into the cloud - and you don't need it back - maybe you already have it on premise and want a copy in the cloud for back-up purposes, or because the cloud is its new home, for heavy processing (like HPC or MapReduce), or just to get it closer to your customers.

(I also blogged on the importance of this announcement if you are interested.)

    Cheers,
    -Bill
