How do I selectively sum cols and rows in Excel 2003 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a s/s grid of names of people vs date showing what training activity they do each day.  The number in the cell is the hours on the job which I want to assign to one of 3 codes (say A,B,C) but I want to find a way to sub total each activity A,B,C into 3 cells at the end of each col (date) and row (name).  The total of each row / col is easy

I have tried SUMIF - the "range" bit  is easy but I cant find a way to code the "criteria" or the "sum_range".  Maybe SUMIF is wrong

Any help will be helpful TY

  • =SUMIF(RangeWithABCs,"A",RangeWithCorrespondingTimes)

So, if column A has A, B, or C, and you want to Sum column B based on A:

    =SUMIF(A:A,"A",B:B)
