Creating a Library to Store Documents that are Content Types in other Sites in the Collection RRS feed

  • I am trying to make working with Content Types as easy as possible.

    I want to create a library where documents that will be content types are stored. For sites within the site collection I want to be able to create content types that "reference" documents stored in my Content Type Library so that if I change the document in the "Content Type" document library all existing and new sites "reference" the updated version of the document and not the replaced versions of the document.

    When I try to edit an existing content type in the List Content Type Information settings I edit the "advanced Settings" and for the selected Content Type enter in the Document Template section I enter the URL for the document in my "Content Type" library in the section where it says "Enter the URL of an Existing Document Template" - however when I click OK I get the Error "an unexpected error has occured" dialog box.

    Am I being dumb or is this not possible?

  • I think I have found an answer to my requirement. I am using Project Server and in the home page of PWA I had created a document library that was in a site below the PWA URL - its URL was http://servername/content

    All project sites  have the URL http://servername/pwa/projectname

    I kept getting error messages when trying to link to content in the  http://servername/content library.

    I then elected to create a library within Project Server - its URL being http://servername/pwa/content

    I was then able to put documents in this library and use their URLs to update content types in sites under URL http://servername/pwa/ 

    This is probably elementary stuff for SharePoint wizards but it stumped me and I am now quite pleased at having figured out how to overcome this problem.
