Using windows store app controls for desktop developement RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am trying to use some of the controls from Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8, in Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop. Such controls include:

    - The new password box with the peek functionality

    - The toggle switch

    - Other controls

I tried referencing the .dll files found in C:\Windows\system32, "Windows.UI.dll" and "Windows.UI.Xaml.dll", however they could not be loaded. I checked the source of where these controls came from, and it seemed to point to these files. However, they won't load in the desktop edition.

    So my two questions are:

    - Is this even allowed (legal?)

    - If so, how can this be done?

    Thanks in advance,

    - Jake M.

  • Hi Blazing,

    >WPF also uses XAML. You can create WPF applications in the Desktop version that use XAML controls.

This feature is supported by Microsoft. But not support between win 8 store app and WinForm. Because Microsoft recommend us to use WPF and win 8 store app.

The third part software may have support about using Metro UI in WinForm. I suggest you to search in https://github.com/ or any other third part control in http://www.bing.com/

    Hello Blazing,

    Welcome to MSDN Forums.

I haven’t heard about using win 8 store app controls in WinForm development, but you could use API. For guidance on how to use it, check out this documentation: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToCallWinRTAPIsInWindows8FromCDesktopApplicationsWinRTDiagram.aspx

  • Doesn't seem to do what I'm looking for. You know how in the Windows 8 Studio Express, in your toolbox, all of those new Windows 8 controls are available? I want those controls to be available in the Desktop edition.

  • I believe all the Windows 8 controls are XAML controls, not Win32 controls. As such, they only work for Windows Store apps.

  • Could you be a little more clear as to why this may or may not work? Why would I have to look for third party alternatives, if they both use XAML, the Desktop and Windows 8 editions?
