Import/copy users from another forest into WSS 3.0 farm? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Community

On a network I have a small WSS 3.0 Farm in a forest. On that same network there is another forest with 350 existing users on a Windows 2003 Server.

I would like to put all the existing 350 users in one group in the WSS 3.0  farm.

How can I copy the 350 exising users from the Windows 2003 Server in one forest into one "group" created in the WSS 3.0 farm in the other forest?

        Thank you

  • To access users in the other farm you need to have a transitive trust between the two forests.  Without that transitive trust the only way to add users in the other forest would be to implement Forms based authentication using an LDAP provider.

  • HI,

I am in agreement with Paul. Once you have imported the users you can create audience based on the rules and you can group them as a single audience.

  • Hello Paul Stork

Forms based authentication using LDAP provider is
    the method I choose.

I understand the forms based authentication part, it
is the LDAP provider part that I am unsure of.

The WSS 3.0 farm is a small farm with SQL Server
and WSS 3.0 containing WFE. That is on one forest.

The other forest contains the 350 users.

In this situation how do I implement an LDAP to get
the 350 users in the other forest into a group I create
in the WSS 3.0 farm in the other forest?

        Thank you

  • Take a look at the following article on Authentication providers.  It has informaiton about how to configure the LDAP membershipprovider to point at the other AD Forest.
