Azure File storage - can you use it for roaming profiles & folder redirection ?

    Question

  • Can you use Azure File Storage (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/storage-dotnet-how-to-use-files/) to host roaming profiles and redirected folders ?

I am planning to put RDS server into Azure and I wonder if I can leverage this service instead of deploying additional VM to provide FS functionality ?

    Best regards

  • Hello,

To store profiles per user, you would want to have access control per user and this isn’t something azure support for SMB at the moment.

This is a scenario Azure will support in the future but in the meantime, you can potentially consider Shared Access Signatures and use REST API instead of SMB, or have different storage account per user.

  • Any updates on this ?

I am interested in two things:

    1) storing user profile disks (UPDs)

    2) folder redirection for common folders like desktop, documents, ...

Is is possible to expose shared folder also via HTTPS protocol like blobs ?

  • Hi Primoz_,

Yes, you can expose Azure File shares via REST. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/storageservices/file-service-rest-api. The File service REST API provides a way to work with share, directory, and file resources via HTTP/HTTPS operations. File service operations are available only in version 2014-02-14 of the storage services or later.

Let me know if you need additional information.

  • Hi

how about using Azure Files shares for UPDs or for redirected folders ?

I guess this is still not supported ?

And how about AD integration ?  Is it possible to assign permission based on AD accounts ?

  • Hi Primoz,  you are correct that UPD's using Azure Files is not supported today. User Profile Disks do make use of ACL's which are not supported at present.  That said, AD integration is on our list as it's a common request that has clear value.  You can track the status of this ask here: https://feedback.azure.com/forums/217298-storage/suggestions/8341212-azure-files-access-share-by-azure-ad-credentials

  • Does this work and is this or some other service for hosting user's redirected folders in Azure supported yet?

  • Any update on this? It's been nearly 6 months since the last update to this thread, and I have a customer asking about Windows 10 profiles on Azure File Shares.

  • Azure Active Directory authentication over SMB for Azure Files (preview) was announced in September. To learn more, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-files-active-directory-overview.
