  • Is this coming to you via Windows Update?

As KB951847 is an update to .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, I think we first need to see what .NET Frameworks you have on your system.

Please download and run this verification tool selecting .NET Framework 3.5:

Post the first 15 lines and last 15 lines of tool output here.

Also, please provide complete install logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs with this:

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find in your %temp% directory. Please upload to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here.

  • It appears your .NET Framework 3.5 is corrupt.

First, as you have Windows XP, what is the Service Pack level?

.NET Framework 3.5 requires, at minimum, SP2.

The first thing to try is a repair of .NET 3.5 from your installed programs list.

If that fails, you'll have to uninstall .NET 3.5, 3.0 and 2.0 in that order, then reinstall everything using this cumulative installer:

Be sure to log on with an account that has full administrative rights, and disable your AV software before running the installer.
