Trouble Downloading from DreamSpark

    Question

  •

I am having issues downloading Microsoft Windows Hardware Certification Kit Consumer Preview, from DreamSpark.

1st thing when I click to download I get a script error.

2nd I click to not run the script and click the download

3rd the download stops several time telling me the location is valid but isnt  (or something like that) ( I changed locations, I changed drives, changed file names)

4rd I click the button to continue the down load- it downloads more data and then its back to number 3 error

Well after two days of trying and letting the download just run I finally got a different error- saying it could not unpack the file.

That is when i contacted DreamSpark Support and they referred me to this  Forum. which I dont find any reference to my issue. Not even a real area to post my issue.

My computer crashed and wouldnt take a back up or a restore and I need Windows 8 to finish my project for my final at my University.

Is there anyone available to assist me  I can provide further details to someone that can slove my problem

    Thanks

    Kelly

  • If you're having trouble downloading from ELMS Webstore (which specifically offers the sdc files, unlike subscriber downloads) you'll have to contact the support team for that service.  They're available at dreamspark@kivuto.com.  Sorry that we can't help you here.

    Thanks,

  • I got the same problem, I tried it on two different computers in my house and it didn't work. I successfully downloaded my Win7 several times but always got CRC error. This situation is repeating for about a month. Maybe forwarding ports on our router could help but I don't know which port SDM is using.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Sorry to hear about that Kelly.  Did you contact Dreamspark support over email?  If so, i'd like to see the contents of that email.

    Thanks,

  • Have the same issues.  My problem is with downloading Visual Studio 2010 and XNA 4.0.  I finally was able to complete XNA after many tries.  Oddly, I just let the download for XNA set after I received the error:

"The download cannot be completed. If a location
selection is available for this  product, select another location. If no
location selection is available, the download may fail to complete because no
Internet connection was found, the  Internet connection was lost or a firewall
or proxy server exists between the client station and hosting location. Please
    try again later."

Previously I had been clicking the Start Download button again but this time I let it run and it completed anyway.  As for Visual Studio 2010 no such luck.  It sets for a good 10-15 minutes at 0% and then give me the error listed above.  I have tried on both my computers and both are on separate connections.  One is Windows 7 the other is running Windows 8 RC.  The XNA completed on the Windows 8 machine as where it just would not on the Windows 7 machine.  I did get the unpacking error a few times as well.

Also, I have checked that there is no firewall or such on my end that is blocking for either connection.  And the connections are on and working when the error occurs.  I tried removing the download manager and re-installing on both machines and that did not help either.  Currently I have the error above on this attempt at Visual Studio 2010.  Oddly, although the start download button is there (green) the program seems to be very slowly downloading like it did with XNA.

I did notice that when I attempted to pause the download for XNA (which I did to see if it would start back where it was instead of starting over when the error came up) the program actually would continue to download sometimes.  Once, I pause because XNA was stuck at 10% and when for something to drink.  Came back and the download was now at 15%.  So I resumed and then a couple minutes later and after no progress I received the error again.  That is when I decided to let the thing set after I received the error above and the download continued to completion.

I am not having no such luck with Visual Studio 2010.  After the error the program continued to 2% and completely stopped.  Now it is at 0% again and just sitting there.  I did contact Dreamspark support via email yesterday so maybe I'll hear something soon.

  • Guess I am sort of replying to myself.  Contacted support and the case was escalated.  Received an email telling me to try to install in safe mode.  Tried that and found 2 things:

    1.  I tried to download the Secure Download Manager and it said that it could not be downloaded in safe mode.  That message came from a pop-up window from the site.

    2.  I looked and I still had the Secure Download Manager installed so I tried to download the software (Visual Studio 2010).  I received the same error as before stating that the serve connection was lost and some other things.  I had already sent screenshots of this to Dreamspark support.

I replied telling support that this did not solve the problem.  They told me that they did not know what else to try and that I could try my campus network or another network.  I have tried the campus network, as well as both of my own (separate lines from the phone company) and my in-laws lines.  The email also said to try Visual Studio 2012 which was now available.  So, I did and received the same error.  2 separate machines and 2 separate connections where tried again.  And it happens on other software I try to download.  And I have talked to others on campus and they have had similar problems.  Guess I will have to buy the student version of 2010 so that I can have it for classes.

Works for me, thanks a lot!!

Quite absurd, by the way. Someone should definitely check where the problem is, and fix it once for all.

  • "Cannot unpack correctly, please download again", "CRC not valid2". Oh com'on, are you f-ing kidding me? It took ONE day to download a simple 3gb file, including looking for a f-ing working proxy in order to solve this absurd problem! And now it doesn't even work? Please, please, someone read this and fix this!

  • Please, can anybody explain me, how to change proxy adress in IE to my country? thanks a lot

1 - Look up "free proxy list" on Google

2- Look up for a proxy address which is indicated as active recently.

3 - Open IE -> settings -> Internet Options -> 'Connections' tab -> LAN settings -> tick "use a proxy server for your LAN"

4 - Paste the IP address under "address" and the port address under "port".

5 - Try to enter a site with your browser to check if the proxy is working properly; if not, try another proxy address.

It took me a while to find a working proxy (maybe I was just unlucky btw), so be patient ;)

  • I kinda found a trick to the CRC errors. I also have tried multiple times on multiple PCs and got the same CRC failure everytime. I was downloading Windows 8 64 bit. This trick might work for everyone having CRC errors as well.

Give it a staredown! Keep an eye on it from 1 - 100%. chances are in my experience it stops the download at around 60% + and then checks for CRCs. At this point I closed the window and re-downloaded again, it might give you an error, but just close it again and resume the download. When it resumes, it would pick up where it left off, around 60% again, keep an eye on it and hopefully you'll get to 100%.

    Tuesday, October 9, 2012 5:24 PM
  • I am having this issue at the moment, after 60% it checks for crc and then has an error, i can't download windows server 2012 or windows 8 professional but visual studio 2012 worked perfectly fine. I tried the proxy but none of them worked, i tried closing it and making it resume but after i get the error at crc the client redownloads the whole file again instead of leaving where it was stopped at.

i have tried 4 different networks and 2 different accounts and it always happens.

when are they going to fix this?

    Sunday, October 21, 2012 6:04 AM
  • Same problem here, I already tried to download Windows 8 (English and German) to 3 different computers and every time the download stops at 66%.

    Monday, October 22, 2012 4:24 PM
  • Can you please try to download any other edition apart from Windows 8. Because I have just downloaded Server 2012 in my France Dedicated Server it worked great. Also, please do post the screenshot of the error message.

  • Thought it would be great to try windows 8 on my new pc.

I'm a student at open university, UK.  Well it downloaded 100% but will not convert the sdc to an ISO, even then I cant remove to retry. Oh dear microsoft. your intentions are good, shame this system sucks. I'm considering returning to the Mac platform now.

  • I was able to resolve this problem by using a wired connection instead of a wireless one.

    The download stopped at 62%.
I connected my laptop with a network cable.
I closed the download manager and opened it again and clicked resume.
    It started downloading again.
It stopped again at 75% and I closed, opened, resumed.

  • I also have the same problem and have been redownloading for 2 days but still the same issue. Microsoft should do something about this. There is also problem with download speed. My internet connection could reach 10 MB/s but downloading Windows 8 (3 GB) took 3 hours.

  • Same issue here. I'm trying desperately to download some software but this system is the worst downloading system I've ever tried. It's impressively slow and it crashes all the time. And when I finally got 100% it turned out that the file was corrupt!!

I'm going to try the proxy tip and see if it works.

I agree with most folks here in the forum. This system should be removed, changed by torrent or at least drastically improved.

    Cheers!

  • Downloading from MSDNAA was never a problem for me before they converted to this .sdc file system.  (Did that coincide with DreamSpark being the firm in charge of the ELMS web store?)  Now, the downloads are prone to errors, and it's more confusing for students.  First of all, there shouldn't be a three-step process where you have to install a download manager and locate an .sdx file.  (If you want to make the download manager an option, then fine.  But there should also be a direct-download option as well.)  Second, once it has been decided to force people to use this convoluted process with .sdx and .sdc files, then at least they could make sure that the system works as advertised.

  • I had the same error: "Unpacking error. The product did not unpack correctly. Please download the product again."

Here's what I got from support:

"Please follow these steps in order to complete the download:

Please uninstall and reinstall the Secure Download Manager (SDM) before retrying your download. To uninstall the SDM, open your “Start” menu and click “Control Panel” and then “Uninstall a Program” (or “Add and Remove Programs” or “Programs and Features”).
You can re-download the SDM through the “Your Account” section (under the “View Details” link in the “Order History” section) of your school WebStore.
Please also ensure that you remove any previously downloaded files. You can remove these through Start -> [Your username on the top right] -> Downloads, or via the directory C:\Users\Your Username\Downloads.

Please note, should you have any antivirus or firewall program present, these may slow or interrupt the download. We recommend temporarily deactivating your antivirus for the duration of the download should you experience any delays or stoppages.
    "

What helped me was reinstalling SDM and deleting all files it downloaded. Next during download pause it like 2-3 times, each time I paused it I've closed the program and then launched it again and resumed the download. When it reached 100% and started unpacking I just waited and finally got to the iso file.

  • I had the same problem "The product did not unpack correctly. Please download the product again", Tried  downloading the 3 GB files 4 times with the same error. BTY I am running Win 7 Professional with all firewall, antivirus off and no Proxy server etc, uninstalled and reinstalled the SDM,SDX etc, shutdown/kicked/restarted the computer several times, to no avail, so can't blame any of them for it. some blogs suggested trying to download in safe mode with networking - that gave the same error.

Finally I downloaded in on a Mac OS and got the full ISO file which works !!!, some blogs also have suggested the same.

I guess the Programmers at Microsoft do all their work on Mac. I am no Mac fanatic, but the fact that to download a microsoft OS one has to take recourse to a Mac computer speaks for itself. Shame on you Microsoft

  • Facing the same problems as you, people.

Trying more than 20 times to download Windows 7 in last 10 days. Never succed, best result 80% of download. Got all problems mentioned (crc, location not valid, etc etc). Tried with restarting SDM and clicking resume - download never resumed, automatically gives an error.

Completely no idea what to do next. I've send email to kivuto, but they wrote automiataclly back that it will take 2 days to reply. And as i see what you've get from them i do not have any hope.

SItuation for me is this now: Microsoft gives to students free licenses - that's fantastic. Students cannot download it because solutions deployed are efficiently blocking download possibilities. Users who wants to be ok and have genuine Windows cannot. So two ways left: buy a copy (why, if we have right to have a free one?) or download cracked from a net (why , if we have rigth to have free genuine copy?)

    This drives me crazy...

    Thursday, November 29, 2012 10:34 AM
  • Same here.

There are three scenarios how my download attept ends (And fails causing me to just waste time):

    - Download stucks on 0%, there is data transfer but there is no progress
    - Download starts, then after while of downloading ( about 30 minutes) it stops (complete lack of any data transfer) and then starts again or not. If it finishes downloading i get CRC error and SDM ask to download file again
    - Download starts (or is stuck at 0%) and i get error:
"The download cannot be completed. If a location selection is available for this  product, select another location. If no location selection is available, the download may fail to complete because no Internet connection was found, the  Internet connection was lost or a firewall or proxy server exists between the client station and hosting location. Please try again later."

    From SecureDownloadManager.log [Download] [Error] OnErrorMessage FileKey 1 http://software.dreamspark.com/dreamspark/POLISH/pl_windows_7_professional_x64_dvd_x15-65829.01.sdc 503

The error repeats when i try again, but if it eventually starts to download i get CRC error at 100% and SDM ask me to download file again.

    Notes:
    - It happens both with my antivirus and firewall enabled and disabled (Microsoft Firewall is disabled)
    - I have Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421, 9.0.11
    - I have fully enabled javascript and activeX
    - My Java and Flash plugins are up to date
    - I tried to use diffrent internet, errors happens both at my home and at university campus internet
    - I already tried to download sdx file again, delete previously downloaded files and start again, reinstall SDM and reconnect internet, reboot my computer, clear cookies and browser cache.

    - Of course my internet connection is fully working, all other programs are downloading and uploading data flawlessly, only SDM that im forced to use is having problems.

  • hey guys finally found the solution...

all the errors is not because of any other problems but because of the internet connectivity. to easily download make sure you follow these steps

    1. its better you turn off the windows firewall
    2. now download the file
    3. and while downloading do not touch anything on the download screen
    4. never pause the download nor close it(if by any chance it happens then just delete the sdc file and start download again, trust me if you continue downloading the same it will never be successful in extracting)
    5. its better you keep the download while you're sleeping or going away and remove the sleep option in the computer's in power options.
    6. and i would suggest you keep the dreamspark account page(signed in) in the browser as it is.
    7. trust me this worked for me after trying for like a thousand times

hope it helped all of you please vote up if it did and post this on other sites too so that more people are benifited.

  • 1st problem:

If you are logged in at dreamspark account you get auto logged out every 10-15 minutes so you have to constantly refresh page to get logged it

Also, i was doing it all before and didnt helped. You didnt do anything and then download was stuck on XX% for several hours.

You say its internet connectivity problem? WRONG, its problem of that download manager we are forced to use.

"never pause the download" - sorry, but isnt the main feature of download manager to resolve paused downloads?

"dont touch anything on download screen, turn off firewall" - there are multiple other download programs that are workng fine with touching everything and haivn firewall up, its just that dreamspark download manger have problem

So please, dont say its "internet connectivity" problem beucase its not true, its problem of dreamspark/dreamspark download manager (Secure Download Manager) and untill they will fix something that causes all of it, all we will have will be just some "steps" to make download probably complete but nothing to make it always work.

  • This is really very frustrating. Kivuto support does not help at all: "Thank you for contacting Kivuto Solutions Inc, previously known as e-academy Inc. Your request (#15453) has been submitted. Our support staff is currently reviewing your request and will get back to you within 2 business days." ... 2 days for getting a download fixed? I am trying to download VS 2012 with different configurations, firewall on/off, reinstalled SDM for 14 days now and it simply does not work. I am not sure what's going on with their server or their "Secure Download Manager", but it is certainly the most annoying download experience I ever had in any kind of online store. :-(

    Thursday, December 6, 2012 2:41 PM
  • What helped me was:

    1. Uninstalled SDM and reinstalled SDM (I don't think that really helped a lot)

    2. While downloading, I checked several times if I'm still logged in in DreamSpark. Before this try, DS kicked me each time out caused by inaktivity.

-> It worked! Just refresh the DS Mainpage while logged in every 10 minutes. Another solution may be, to logg in your account before the download is finished.

  • Hi all,

I've found a possible solution for extremely slow download speeds.

possible cause under Windows Vista, 7, 8 is TCP/IP version 6 and/or QoS enabled in your network adapter.

If you encounter a slow download, e.g. 10% of what you expected, then try the following:

    1. First of all, closing opened applications is recommended.
    2. Open Network Properties (Start > Network > Rightclick > Properties)
    3. Open "Adapter Settings" at the left side of the dialog
    4. Locate the adapter that you are currently connected with your Internet. In most cases this is the "Local Area Network" or "Wireless Network"
    5. Rightclick > Properties on the adapter
    6. Disable the checkboxes in the dialog for "QoS" and "Internet Protocol Version 6"
    7. Apply dialog with OK
    8. Rightclick > Properties on the adapter, then "Disable" (you will loose internet connection)
    9. Rightclick > Properties on the adapter, then "Enable" (you will soon be reconnected)

I don't use an english version, so some names may vary.

You can easily undo the steps again, just enable the checkboxes again.

    Effects:

Before the increase, my Windows 7 setup (3 GB) download didn't finish within 15 hours.

After the increase it finished 7% of the whole download within few minutes.

    Side effects:

Disabling TCP/IP version 6 will probably have no effect on > 95% of all computers.

Disabling QoS (quallity of service) may have effect on some computers (approx 10%) causing worse performance duriing realtime conversations such as Skype, video conferences etc.

I am a little bit of disappointed from Microsoft in using that Secure Download Manager. This is not the quality and experience that I know and expect from Microsoft for so many years. Nevertheless, special thanks to Microsoft for the great products.

    Best regards, Kadir

  • I also was having problems downloading with SDM.

It would halt repeatedly, but at least "resume" worked. But when I got to the end, there was an "Unpacking error. Please try downloading again."

I contacted tech support (by emailing DreamSpark@Kivuto.com). Dave replied, and asked me to try several things. The one which worked was very simple: try using a different internet connection. My friend tried it on his high speed connection, and it worked flawlessly.

Although I was also frustrated, like everyone on this thread, Dave asked me to stop and think: tens of thousands of people are downloading from Dreamspark. If SDM had a fatal flaw, they would be completely flooded with requests for support. That's simply not happening. It's only a relatively small number of us that are having this problem. And thankfully, he was able to steer me in the right direction.

  • After struggling with this problem for a month or so, I now find that the download works fine (as if by magic). I haven't changed anything in my approach -- still using the same system, same connection and all the same settings. Previously, my download would fail after 12 hours or so... but this morning my 1.7Gb file downloaded in under 3 minutes and works fine.

Have Kivuto finally sorted out their shoddy download manager?

  • Hello,

If i try to download by starting the sdx file and in the Download Manager the start button,

    it gives a error,

but if i change the Language at the top right corner, after starting the Download Manager

and go to the start button, it is working...

    Hope its an option

    Bye

  • Well the best way is to download trial version from torrent or buy a trial version cd and than give the dream spark key downloading from the dreamspark via sdc is wastage of time nothing else i suggest you to download from torrent and than apply the product key which you get from dreamspark i have done this with my windows 8.1 with my visual studio 2012 ultimate and the database are free to install .Hopefully you understand what i am saying dont stuck with sdc file .
