Login Failure Errpr 18456 Severity 14 State 5 RRS feed

  • Hello Forum

    I have just added an AD Developer Group to a SQL Server Development instance and I've granted the group dbo permissions to all the databases under development; however one of our developers has just tried to connect to SQL Server and it failed and this is the error message

    Message
    Login failed for user 'xxx\smithj'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: 192.168.?.??]

    SQL Server Version is 2012 Standard on a Windows 2012 Server Cluster.

  • is the user list in this output

    xp_logininfo 'mydomain\mygroup','members'

    cany any other developer login to  server?

  • Yes the is member listed, another member of the group; although listed; cannot connect either.

  • Have the users logged out and then logged back into Windows again, so their login tokens will pick up the new group membership?

  • Tried that as well Rick; one of the users even restarted their PC but we are still getting the same login failures

  • Just carried out a Cluster failover to see if that would resolve the issue; no joy.

  • Doee the query

    SELECT * FROM sys.server_principals WHERE name = 'CSU\All Software Engineers'

    return any rows? If it does, double-check that the SID matches what's in the AD.
