SQL 2008 Express upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 Trial RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I have SQL 2008 Express and plan to try 2008 R2. I have 3 questions:

    1. I have Vista Business 32 bit. Will 2008 R2 install ti my computer? (In the software requirements I read that windows Server is needed.)

    2. Can I upgrade from 2008 express to 2008 R2 whithout trouble?

    3. If later I by a developer licence can I "activate" my instance to developer version?

    Thanks a lot, mnb

  • Hello, thanks for your post.

    1. To install on Windows Vista you must Manually install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.
        Please see this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

    2. In this link you can see the Version and Edition Upgrades for SQL Server:

        http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx
    {

    FROM: SQL Server 2008 Express1

    TO:
    SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Tools, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Advanced Services, SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup, SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard, SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer, SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, SQL Server 2008 R2 Datacenter

    }

    3. If you buy an developer licence it will work on SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer version
        But you can upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks Willy,

    Although it seemed that an upgrade is possible (the link you provided sad that, and the "Upgrade advisor utility also said that) I have got an error:

    System Configuration Check Report:

    UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup configuration checks for rules group 'UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules'
    FeatureUpgradeMatrixCheck Checks whether the specified feature meets SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrade requirements. Failed The specified edition upgrade is not supported. For information about supported upgrade paths, see the SQL Server 2008 R2 version and edition upgrade matrix in Books Online.

    So eventually I uninstalled 2008 Express and after the install of 2008 R2 was without problem.

    I also know already that the trial version is a "full" (enterprise) version, so when a later time I will buy the developer licence, I will be able to activate my trial to the developer version.

    Thanks, mnb
