Could I build a Win8.1 Windows Store App on a Win8 machine?

    Question

  • Yeah, I just want to "build" instead of "run". Is it possible?

I've installed the latest SDK(it is for Win8.1) on my Win8 machine but failed to build a Win8.1 app.

Could anybody give me any hint?

    Thank you very much!

  • To build a Windows Store app for Windows 8.1, you need:

Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 OS + Visual Studio 2013 tools (any edition except Express for Web or Express for Desktop).

To build a Windows Store app for Windows 8.0, you need:

Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 OS + Visual Studio 2013 tools with the "Tools for maintaining Windows Store apps for Windows 8.0" optional package installed

    -or-

Windows 8.0/Windows Server 2012 OS + Visual Studio 2012 tools.

For Win32 desktop apps you have more flexibility (Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 or later), but there's some special effort needed to use the Windows 8.1 SDK with the VS 2012 or 2010 tools. • Hi, Dave,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Is there any chance or scenario that we could build on a env, for example, building a Win8 Store App on a Win7?

Or for Windows Store App, it is a special case?

    Thanks!

  • Hi, Dave/Chuck,

Thank you very much! It seems that Windows Store App is a special case.

Hope this thread be helpful to others.
