Azure VPN with Azure VPN Gateway RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

Is this possible to set up to an Azure IPSEC tunnel without setting up an Azure VPN gateway. One of our concern is that since we have limitation of 30 VPN tunnel to Azure using site-2-site in Azure, can that be overcome if we directly connect to a VPN VM (Network Virtual Appliance) with a public IP without a VPN gateway?

  • If you need more than 30 tunnels, you can use Azure Virtual WAN

A VPN Gateway is not required to establish a S2S VPN in Azure, you can also do this using a NVA, which is just a VM configured to perform a networking function.

  • It means that you need deploy Azure VWAN per region. You can connect upto 1000 VNETs per virtual HUB.

How many VPN devices can connect to a single Hub?

Up to 1000 connections are supported per virtual hub. Each connection consists of two tunnels that are in an active-active configuration. The tunnels terminate in an Azure Virtual Hub vpngateway.

  • Thanks Cragg,

I looked into Azure VWAN, however, it says it doesn't support Global Vnet peering...does that mean that Global VNet peering would not work at all in Azure WAN
