  • Windows 8 uses the feature zero power ODD (ZPODD) to disable the optical drives if no medium is used.

To revert this, set the value

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Parameters\ZeroPowerODDEnabled

    to 0.

    I couldn't found the "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Parameters\ZeroPowerODDEnabled" registry...
When I insert a new media, still not working     =(

    I'm still waiting for a solution...thanks

Is iTunes installed? Have you tried connecting to another USB port?
Please understand that this is a preview and some products might not work right with this release, so you probably should continue using Windows 7 or a commercially released version of Windows for production usage. Windows 8 at this time should only be for evaluation purposes. I am sure Apple will release an updated version of iTunes in the future that supports Windows 8 closer to launch.

Create the DWORD ZeroPowerODDEnabled under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Parameters and set the value to 0.
