Open XML format for Office 2003 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Is it possible to use Open XML format and its SDK to read files which were created using office 2003 or office 2000?

Is Open XML format makes use of Office Interop API ? I would like to know whether Open XML format is only wrapper around old Office Interop API or completely new API?

    Thanks and Regards, Chandrashekhar

  • Hello,

Open XML SDK is completely a new API.

We cannot use it to read files that created using Office 2000 and 2003.

Since Office 2007 version, Office adopts Open XML Format as the document's default format. From then, Office 2007 and higher version file is just a zipped package file which consists of many parts of XML files. The contained XML files are used to describe content in the document.

To observe this behaivor, you can change office 2007 or higher version document's extension name from, for example, .docx to .zip. Then you can open the .zip file using Windows Explorer. So for the same reason, Open XML SDK is just for Open XML Format based document, and it cannot open files created using previous Office version.
