EW2 trial broke my spell checker in Outlook express? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just DL'd the EW2 trial a couple days ago.
I like it so far and purchased it at Amazom (It's being shipped to me)

I was using Front page 2002, thought it was time to upgrade, plus my web host is dumping front page extentions.

Anywho, the spell checker works fine in EW2, but now the spell checker I use in Outlook express 6 does not work.
I uninstalled the spell checker from my Office 97 Cd and then re-installed it.
    Still no good.

When I hit the spell check buttin in OE6 I get a pop up window that says
"An Error ocuured while the spelling was being checked"

    searched for spell checker
Did not see anything relating to my problem.
    Thanks for any help

    Anyone heard of this?

Never heard of this.  Might want to check out an OE newgroup/forum to see how to restore it.

Don't open the package from Amazon when you get it.  EW3 is coming out in a few weeks.  Check all the information on EW3 to see if that's a better fit for you.  It might just be better to wait.

    Ah carp, really?

I should just send it back to amazon?
I suppose if I did install the paid for version, I would just have to pay for an update to EW3?

I paid $229 (normally $299) at amazon, maybe EW3 will be more than that and the upgrade price will be about the same as purchasing EW3????

  • Not sure of the price point for EW3 but I would assume it to be very close to EW2.  I would read up on EW3 and then make an informed descision on whether to send it back or not.  If it were me, I would probably return it and wait.

Cancel it, send it back. you paid way too much.
The upgrade version should have been about $100.00 IIRC

  • It was not an upgrade, I have never purchased EW

  • There are many qualifying programs for the EW upgrade price, and FP is certainly one of them. You should only have paid the $99 or less upgrade price, anyway.  Definitely return that one, and get the upgrade EW2 or wait and see what EW3 will be.

  • Man, I read the MS EW site and saw that info nowhere.

I definately will send it back now.

    I own FP 98 and FP 2002

Thanks for the heads up on that.

  • On Microsoft's Expression Web page:

    http://expression.microsoft.com/en-us/cc136529.aspx

look at the link up front and center for "Expression upgrade pricing and eligibility information"

  • Yeah, I just saw it in the small print on the Amazon page.

I already have the RMA in hand from Amazon.
It goes back as soon as it is delivered.

I saw the upgrade for $80+ at amazon

I already uninstalled Frint page 2002 and moved it to another computer.
I need a web editor for my business here and I can't wait for EW3
My trial for EW2 is only good for 30 days.

Thanks for all the info and help.

  • "I already uninstalled Frint page 2002 and moved it to another computer."

Don't worry about that - you can still install the upgrade version without reinstalling it.

  • Thanks Kathy.

I guess what I was getting at was that I am going to have to purchase the EW2 upgrade.
There is no way I can wait on EW3 and hope that it comes out in time before my EW2 trial is up.

And I don't really want to uninstall FP2002 from the other computer because I use that computer for web design when I am at home.

    see ya
thanks again for all the info

  • By the way, in case you weren't aware, but EW is licensed on a per-user basis.  You can install it on more than one computer, as long as you are the only one using it.

  • Oh really!

That's great because MS Po'd me big time with FP2002.

I tried to install it here on a nother desktop and it would not let me.
I called them to see what was up and they said I would have to buy another license.

I was hot under the collar.

That's awesome, I can finally dump Front page.

  • The "30-day" trial doesn't start counting days until the first of the month after you installed it. So, if you installed EW2 after June 1, it will expire at the END of July. You should have plenty of time to get EW 3 by then.

  • More good info
Thanks, looks like I have plenty of time now.

  • So back to your original question...if something appears to be corrupt in Outlook, there is a Repair or Diagnostic option on the Help menu that you can use to repair the program. I assume Outlook Express has the same or a similar feature?

  • Thanks all but the original problem has not been solved

The minute I installed EW2, the spell check stopped working in Outlook Express.
I guess I could go hunting elsewhere, but EW2 caused the problem.

  • Yeah, I went to the control panels and tried to find a repair option for OE.

I uninstalled and re-installed the spell checker from the original Office CD
I did a repair on the Office suite

It is Office 97, which is really old, but all I ever used on the Office 97 cd was spell checker, excel and once in a great while, word.

  • Since this is an Expression Web user forum, I do not believe you will get an answer about a broken Office 97 spell checker.  Don't know if Microsoft would help with that on installation support but you could email them and try it. (After you buy a copy - no help on trials.)

  • I'd return the v2 full version to Amazon and get the v2 upgrade version. If you have any version of Office, FrontPage, Dreamweaver, GoLive, Creative Suite or any of the other programs listed on the upgrade eligibility page you can get it v2 for $99 or less. That way you could have both versions for probably less than you spent on the full version.

  • Steve's link provided the info that helped me get the Outlook Express spell checker working again.

Installing the trial of EW2 wrote over the top of some of the files needed by OE6 spell checker.
So, IMO, this is an EW2 issue, and maybe only the trial software does this.

    The fix:
I went to another one of my PC's that has OE6 and a spell checker that still works and copied all the files in this folder.
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof"

Then I went to the Non working spell checker PC and made two folders just to have backup files before changing everything
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Old"
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof"\New"

    Non working spell checker PC:
I copied the existing files in the proof folder to the New folder
(BTW, there are many more files in this folder now after installing EW2, in fact 25 files)
I pasted the files from the working spell checker PC into the Old folder. (This is only 5 files)

I then pasted the files from the Old folder into the Proof folder on the machine with the broken spell checker.
I restarted Outlook express and now the spell checker works.
I started EW2 and tested the spell checker and it worked also.
