mssql 2008r2 and 2005 on the same server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have installed mssql 2008r2 on a server that already has mssql 2005 installed.  We discover that the database mail configuration that was setup on mssql 2005 is gone.

Is this due to compatibility issue between 2008 and 2005?  Also, what other components will be affected by installing 2008r2 on server that has 2005?

  • Hi

Both SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2005 stores Database Mail configuration information in its own MSDB database, unless you do Inplace upgrade of SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2, this issue would not happen.

If you have a backup of MSDB database from SQL Server 2005, you can restore it and get your settings back. Please make sure to stop SQL Server Agent before restoring the backup.

You can run both SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2005 on same computer, only thing is your SQL Server Native client will be upgraded to latest version, but if you specifically want both versions of SQL Server Native Client, After installing 2008 R2, download SQL Server Native Client for 2005 from this link and install it

Please select your download based on your computer edition (32 or 64 bit)
