Visual Studio freezes after stopping Debug RRS feed

  • Question

  • I got a very annoying problem with my Visual Studio 2008 Professional.

When I'm debugging a WebApplication (in ASP.NET MVC), and I stop the debug (by pressing the STOP-button), the program freezes for more than 30 seconds, before actually stopping the debug. There are no errors or warnings, just a very annoying freeze. It doesn't matter how many files there are open.

I'm using IIS to debug, not the built-in Development server.

Anybody got an idea what to do about this?

  • Hello pbijl,

    Thanks for reporting this issue!

There are many reasons for the IDE hangs, basically, this is caused by the shared mutexes of System Dlls (more detail). You could use various debugging tools (windbg.exe, NTSD, DebugDiag and so on) to trouble shoot the issue. But before doing that, I recommend you apply SP1 of Visual Studio 2008 and upgrade the latest hotfix. Another idea is manually detach the processes Visual Studio Debugger has attached (please open Processes window and check) and then stop debugging. Does this issue still occur?

I'm looking forward to your test results.
    Best regards
