Editing Office Documents in "Office Web App Server 2013" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I’m trying to get confirmation about required components and SharePoint.

I have an Office Web App Server 2013 that has a UNC share on it. Users are able to view word and excel documents in a browser via a URL. This works well, and looks great. I know that editing these documents is possible and can be made available. In order to enable editing, I enabled the editing command via PowerShell on the Office Web Apps Server. From the output, it looks like it’s enabled. However, those same files are still opened as read-only.

From what I can tell, in order to enable editing in a browser, Office Web Apps needs to tie to a SharePoint server.

Do these documents then need to reside inside a library or collection in SharePoint? Is there no other option to enable web editing of office documents (ie… via our own web app or file share)?.

Our current application document repository does not reside in SharePoint, and we are gradually moving to a completely web based solution for our application.
