Intel graphics hardware H264 MFT ProcessInput call fails after feeding few input samples, the same works fine with Nvidia hardware MFT RRS feed

  • I'm capturing the desktop using DesktopDuplication API and converting the samples from RGBA to NV12 in GPU and feeding the same to MediaFoundation hardware H264 MFT. This works fine with Nvidia graphics, and also with software encoders but fails when only intel graphics hardware MFT is available. The code works fine on the same intel graphics machine if I fallback to Software MFT. I also have ensured that the encoding is actually done in hardware on Nvidia graphics machines.

    On Intel graphics, MFT returns MEError ("Unspecified error"), which happens just only after the first sample is fed, and subsequent calls to ProcessInput (when event generator triggers METransformNeedInput) returns "The callee is currently not accepting further input". It's rare that MFT consumes a few more samples before returning these errors. This behavior is confusing, I'm feeding a sample only when the event generator triggers METransformNeedInput asynchronously through IMFAsyncCallback, and also checking properly whether METransformHaveOutput is triggered as soon as a sample is fed. This really baffles me when the same asynchronous logic works fine with Nvidia hardware MFT & Microsoft software encoders.

    Only the TransformNeedInput event is getting triggered all the time yet the encoder complains that it couldn't accept any more input. TransformHaveOutput event has never been triggered.

    I have tried to mock just the input source (By programmatically creating an animating rectangle NV12 sample) leaving everything else untouched. This time, the intel encoder doesn't complain anything, I have even got output samples. Except the fact that the output video of intel encoder is distorted whereas Nvidia encoder works perfectly fine.

    Furthermore, I'm still getting the ProcessInput error on intel encoder for my original NV12 source that I have no issues with Nvidia MFT and software encoders.

    Did you get MF_E_NOTACCEPTING (0xc00d36b5) error? If it is true, you can following the document to try to solve this issue.

    If the MFT already has enough input data to produce an output sample, it does not accept new input data, and ProcessInput returns MF_E_NOTACCEPTING. At that point, the client should clear the pending input data by doing one of the following:

    An exception to this rule is the MFT_OUTPUT_STREAM_LAZY_READ flag. When this flag is present, the transform will discard stored samples if you give it more input. For more information, see IMFTransform::GetOutputStreamInfo. A transform should never queue any more input data than is required to produce the correct output.

    An MFT can process the input data in the ProcessInput method. However, most MFTs wait until the client calls ProcessOutput.

    After the client has set valid media types on all of the streams, the MFT should always be in one of two states: Able to accept more input, or able to produce more output. It should never be in both states or neither state. An MFT should only accept as much input as it needs to generate at least one output sample, at which point ProcessInput returns MF_E_NOTACCEPTING. When ProcessInput returns MF_E_NOTACCEPTING, the client can assume that the MFT is ready to produce output.

    If you still can't solve this issue you can show a complete and reproducible sample so I can do a further investigation.

    And how do you check if "only intel graphics hardware MFT is available"  or not?

  • I have just figured out that the encoder doesn't simply return MF_E_NOTACCEPTING, the real problem is actually the IMFAsyncCallback that generates MEError immediately after the first sample's been fed to the transform, and that error never happens after that event for that instance. And only the subsequent calls to ProcessInput after the MEError event return MF_E_NOTACCEPTING regardless of how many times it gets called. It's also strange that the IMFAsyncCallback  keeps generating METransformNeedInput even after returning MEError. I don't understand why this happens only with intel hardware MFTs. I have tested the same with Nvidia graphics, that works just fine.

    "And how do you check if "only intel graphics hardware MFT is available"  or not?" : I'm only enumerating the hardware transforms and printing the MFT_FRIENDLY_NAME_Attribute.

    I have uploaded the entire source code in compiling state (https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjhnJ_31tGLHiE4e5E4wLjP7bLhb?e=AZ468Q). You may simply launch DesktopToRTP.sln in VisualStudio 2019 and build one of the available targets (Debug Win32, Release Win32, Release_without_optimization Win32). To test the RTP output stream, you may run the runFFPlay.bat present inside FFPlayTest.zip attached with the source code.

    You may also set MFTEnum flags to MFT_ENUM_FLAG_ALL | MFT_ENUM_FLAG_SORTANDFILTER. This will enumerate all the available transforms and fallback to software or next available encoder on intel graphics machies a few retries after the error occurs.

  • Not sure if this is the cause of your issue. I believe Intel H264 encoder MFT sets MFT_OUTPUT_STREAM_PROVIDES_SAMPLES flag on MFT_OUTPUT_STREAM_INFO::dwFlags returned by IMFTransform::GetOutputStreamInfo. In that case, the IMFTransform itself is responsible for allocating the output sample rather than the caller. Your code does not seem to check for that flag or have any code to handle it if present.
