Is VS Community 2015 allowed to use in big firms for internal use? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it allowed to use the free version of visual studio for developing applications which are not distributed and only used in the firm itself. In my case it is about developing desktop test software for internal use in germany.

    Tool: Visual Studio Community 2015

    SDK: .Net 4.5

    GUI Framework: WPF

  • hi there ,

you can find this back in the license agreement , so i think the internal use is allowed according to the license agreement.

    https://www.visualstudio.com/license-terms/mt171547/

Organization licenses. If you are an organization, your users may use the software as follows:

    • Any number of your users may use the software to develop and test your applications released under Open Source Initiative (OSI) approved open source software licenses.
    • Any number of your users may use the software to develop and test extensions to Visual Studio.
    • Any number of your users may use the software to develop and test your applications as part of online or in person classroom training and education, or for performing academic research.
    • If none of the above apply, and you are also not an enterprise (defined below), then up to 5 of your individual users can use the software concurrently to develop and test your applications.
    • If you are an enterprise, your employees and contractors may not use the software to develop or test your applications, except for open source and education purposes as permitted above. An “enterprise” is any organization and its affiliates who collectively have either (a) more than 250 PCs or users or (b) more than one million US dollars (or the equivalent in other currencies) in annual revenues, and “affiliates” means those entities that control (via majority ownership), are controlled by, or are under common control with an organization.

    kind regards

    Laurens

  • Hi geronimho,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Refer to your description, please download and check this: Microsoft Visual Studio Licensing and you will find the detail information about who can use the Visual Studio Community 2015:

**Who can use the Software Rights to use Visual Studio Community depend on the customer segment and usage scenarios as explained below.

    **Individual developers

Any individual developer can use Visual Studio Community, to create their own free or paid apps.

    **Organizations

An unlimited number of users within an organization can use Visual Studio Community for the following scenarios: in a classroom learning environment, for academic research, or for contributing to open source projects.

For all other usage scenarios: In non-enterprise organizations up to 5 users can use Visual Studio Community. In enterprise organizations (meaning those with >250 PCs or > $1M in annual revenue) no use is permitted for employees as well as contractors beyond the open source, academic research and classroom learning environment scenarios described above.

Since you are under an organization and use it for internal use not in a classroom learning environment, for academic research, or for contributing to open source projects, as my understanding, it is not allowed, sorry for this inconvenience. Maybe you should consider the Visual Studio professional or enterprise version for your work requirement.

    Best regards,

    Sara

  • Hi geronimho,

Sorry to trouble and for your scenario, you cannot use the VS community 2015. But if you just only want to develop the WPF application, maybe you can consider another free version: Visual Studio Express 2015 for Windows Desktop which have no limitation about the big company like the community version.

To download it, please access this: https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/older-downloads/ and sign in with your Microsoft account and join Dev Essentials, then click Downloads and search with the keyword, you will find the download resource as below, and hope it can meet your development requirement.

    Best regards,

    Sara
