Excel Services: External Data Refresh Failed - on open but works if you do manual refresh? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have several Excel files loaded into a SharePoint 2013 document library.

The files open with Excel services and most of them have no issues.

When the Excel file opens it is set to refresh data on open.

It connects to SSAS Tabular 2012 data model.

However, one of the workbooks always throws the "External Data Refresh Failed" error.  I can then click "OK" and go to DATA and "Refresh All Connections" and that works fine.

It is only the refresh on open that throws the error.

It works fine if I open it in the Excel desktop client app.   Other worksheets also seem to work fine.  I can't seem to reproduce the issue but this worksheet has several tabs and dashboards built so just rebuilding it from scratch isn't really an option.

I also find that if I start deleting tabs out of the workbook the problem persists until I delete every single tab that uses the same data connection (only one connection in the workbook).

So it does not appear as if a single pivot chart or table is causing the issue.

    Thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!
