Cannot open SharePoint 2010 via url

Dears I tried to open the system via url for example (http:// URL /main) and it is not working it give me (Internet explorer cannot display web page) but inside the server it is working correctly. before 3 days it is working today is not without any change to the configuration. But when i open it with the IP (http:// *IP* /main) it is working.
Server info
(Virtual server "VMWARE").
The server in another subnet than the users.
Sharepoint 2010 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008, MS SQL 2008 R2.
Any body know what is the problem might be?

Add the name the server to your hosts file and give it the IP address. to do so, do the following.
(on the machine not the server) C:> Windows>System 32 > Drivers > etc > hosts , open it in notepad, add the ip address and name of your server after the latest entry, and save!

Your DNS could be an issue here. Ping the url and see if it returns any results. Then follow the instructions in the post under to prove that theory

Then you have a dns issue. Contact your network team and see how they can help you resolve the dns issue.
