Sql server named instance in sql server cluster installation. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In our lab we created a 2 node cluster of Sql server 2008R2
in Windows server 2008 R2 . We had three virtual machines
for it with one domain and 2 nodes for sql server. We had also
3 virtual harddisks as luns. For Quorum, DTC and SqlData(For mdf,ldf
and backups). If we have to have a named instance in the Sql server
cluster instance, for the named instance should we have a 3 more
luns and should the named instance have a seprate and different ip
    than the default instance.

    Thanking you in advance,

    Binny.

  • Hello -  You do not need additional disk for Quorum and you do not need separate disk for MS-DTC. Here MS-DTC is a separate clustered resource ( and to be configured only once which can be used all the instances hosted by these machines ). For Quorum as well, you just need to define it once and all nodes within the cluster uses it (Shared under single cluster group)

However, you would definitely require separate disk for Data+ Log +Backup etc for other instance. Additionally separate IP (Only one more Virtual IP + SQL Server Network name ) would be required for other named instance.

    In Summary, you need:

    • One more disk resource for Data+Log+Backup
    • One separate Virtual IP + Virtual Name (SQL Server Network Name)
    • No Additional Quorum configuration (It is shared)
    • No Additional MS-DTC configuration (It is again shared)

    Hope this helps

    Good Luck!

Yes you would require 3 different disks again because this is new installation and would create different resource group and hence would require different set of disks

You can share MSDTC but since they are different installation I wuld say keep is separate.

  • Hi Shanky,

Thank you for the clarification. As pointed out in the forum by Manu can the quorum and MS-DTC disks be shared by the instances? And is your advice to create disks for quorum,DTC  as a matter of best practice.

    Thanking you in advance,

    Binny.

No if you are using SQl server 2008 r2 and not using operation/queries which use distributed transaction you would not require MSDTC. Unless you are using Linked servers,OPENROWSET,OPENQUERY,RPC you wont require it. Please read this article.

On Windows Server 2008 failover clusters, the first MSDTC Resource becomes the default MSDTC. Yes it can be shared. There are some good information on MSDTC please read it

  • Hi Manu,

Thank you very much for your clarification. However as pointed out by Shanky would there be any problem in assigning disk for quorum and another disk for MS-DTC again for the named instance on the logic that named instance is virtually a new installation?

    Thanking you in advance

    Binny.
