Migrating to 2014 and alias created for linked server is not connecting

    Question

  • We created an alias to another SQL Server and configured it with the correct port number. On 2005, I just referenced the alias name and created the linked server and it worked great and now we don't have to change code if the server changes (where that has already happened twice recently)
But we are migrating off 2005 (finally got the hardware and license) and did the same thing as above on the 2014 server and it's not working. It's not finding the server at all.
I set up the linked server using the full name and port and that linked server works.
    What are we missing?

  • We found the issue. Part of it was a DNS issue. The other is it appears it's CASE SENSITIVE. Got the DNS resolved and the casing to match and now it works.

    We are running 2014, SP1, 64 bit.

  • Hello,

Have you tested the SQL Server alias on the machine where the new SQL Server 2016 is running? Have you created the alias in the same 64 bit architecture as your SQL Server?
