NearMe metro style app RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi -

    I am creating an app, which uses maps similar to NearMe app. COuld somebody points to samples of the app code? I have gone through basic map samples but wanted to get details about this app about how the maps are being used.

    Any pointers would help;

    Thanks

  • The NearMe app does use the iframe technique with HTML/JavaScript.  There is a messaging process for sending commands from the main page to the iframe control and another for sending map events back from the control to the main page.

  • Hi David,

    I believe the NearMe app uses the Bing maps API as documented at http://www.microsoft.com/maps/developers/web.aspx . I am not aware of any Metro style app samples which demonstrate using the Bing API, but since it is an AJAX API I don't believe it can be used readily from a C# or VB app.  It will be much easier from an HTML/JavaScript app (such as NearMe).  You should be able to talk to the web services from a Metro style app in C#, but not use the full canned controls.  You will likely find more specific information in the forums for the Bing maps control at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-PH/vemapcontroldev/threads .

  • Thanks Rob. I was looking for solution which can be done in JS/HTML also. It seems NearMe app uses Bing API but needed to know the details. I know bing mapcontrol forum but was looking for any WIN8 solutions similar to one done in that app. I have already tried Iframe solution but wanted to confirm IS that the same used in that app as well!

  • The Mashup sample at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Mashup-Sample-10689f5b demonstrates using the Bing maps control in a Metro style app with HTML & Javascript.  You'll be better off asking for help with those languages in the appropriate forum at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winappswithhtml5/threads

    This forum is specific to building Metro style apps using Xaml and .Net languages.
