Windows Explorer crash in Windows Developer Preview

    Question

  • I recently installed WDP. Things was going fine. But after about 1 month using it, now i can't even access to my executable file (*.exe). When you need to find some files in your system you open the Windows Explorer right? With me, i can use it, and click on whatever files i want, but not *.exe. Everytime i click on the *.exe file, the Windows Explorer will crash and restart (the explorer.exe itseft, all other program is not affected) which make it impossible to open .exe file. Also, the movement of the mouse when the explorer crash gone crazy. Imagine its movement is a cartoon made from about 20 fps or more, then the movement of the mouse when explorer crash is just 2 or 3 fps. After the explorer restart, the mouse gets back to normal. And also it's not an infinite loops. Odds enough, but i think im the only one experiencing this troublesome bug. And sometime the explorer crash right at the moment i turned on the computer, and like the other crash, it get back to normal after 5->6 sec. When this bug start appear, about a week ago, i always got a metro-style error reporting something like explorer.exe has runs into a trouble and it need to restart, along with a option which lets me choose whether i can send the information about this prob. to Microsoft or not, but now i'm not getting this massage anymore...

  • Looks like WinRAR is the cause:

  • zZDormonZz,

Have you tried a refresh to see if this alleviates your problem?

To do a refresh of your machine then please do the following:

    1. Click Start > Control Panel

    2. Select the General section on the left

    3. Click the “Get started” button under “Refresh your PC without affecting your files”.

    4. Click the Next button at the “Refresh your PC” step of the wizard.

    · This first step of the wizard is shown in a green strip that covers the middle portion of the screen.

    · The description text at this step shows the following:

    Here’s what will happen:

    · Your files and personalization settings won’t change.

    · Your PC settings will be restored to their defaults.

    · Apps from Windows Store will be kept. All other apps will be removed.

    5. Insert the USB key or DVD with the Windows installation files if prompted.

    · This description text at this step shows the following:

Insert your Windows installation or recovery media

    · Some files are missing. The media will provide these files.

    · As soon as you insert the media, the wizard automatically moves to the next step.

    6. Click the Refresh button at the “Ready to refresh your PC” step.

    · This description text at this step shows the following:

Your PC will restart. This will take a few minutes.

At this point, the PC will restart and the Push Button Reset process will take over. Once completed, your PC will reboot and the user will be left at the Lock Screen where they can log back in with their existing user account.

“When you reset your PC your personal files and apps will be removed and your PC settings will be restored to their defaults.”

Please post back with the results

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • Hi,

Windows Explorer crashes are mostly caused by an incompatible Shell Extension.

please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer_full.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it. If you can't do this, run regedit.exe and import the registry file there!

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

  • Thanks Chris and Adre for reply so fast to my problem:D. I tried the reg file from Andre's Skydrive and it's work, now it isn't crashing anymore when click on exe file . Maybe I need to observe it for some more days but right now, it's gone back to the way it's was. Thanks again for your solution Andre^^. Also i can't find the Localdumps on C:\ even though i search it with WinRAR, which will reveal any system file.

  • This is no solution, becasue it only configures Windows to generate dumps when Explroer crashes. You can't find the folder becasue you didn't get a new crash.

I see you deleted your post. You can post your dumps too, so that an MSFT employee can look at them. compress them as 7z (LZMA2).

  • André,

I'm having the same issue, I was wondering if you would be able to do the same for myself as you did for zZDoremonZz.
I ran the .reg file and imported the WER_Explorer_full.reg, allowed it to crash to create a dump file, compressed it as mentioned below using 7zip and uploaded it in the folder here:

    https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=1c2fbb7f776292b9&resid=1C2FBB7F776292B9!675&parid=root

I appreciate any help you can give me.

  • Thanks so much!
    I appreciate your prompt response.

While updating didn't work so well, now that I know that had compatibility issue lies in ATI Tray Tools, I managed to remove it via a boot through Linux, and the issue seems fixed.
I'll post back if there are any later issues.

After updating, I received a Blue Screen of Frown Emote, and with each subsequent boot, continued to receive blue screens. So for now I'm removing it and will work through with some testing to see what I can do.

    Appreciate it,

    Daniel

  • Then it's kinda weird because after i apply the reg file, the prob just fade away ~.~. Anyway, now it's poped up again and with the error message for me to choose if i want to send the data to Microsoft (yay!). And after I looked at the Localdumps, I can't believe in my own eye xD, 3,5 Gb and counting. I suppose that I won't be able to upload them to my Skydrive b/c it's kinda big for my IC speed

P/s: 3,5 Gb, and get separated for about 400 Mb per error. Maybe i'll try to upload it if it generated more so u can take a deeper look at the problem i've been experiencing. I'll try to updated ATI tray tool or remove it since I have it installed too. Not touch it regularly b/c it does me no good but, who know if it's poking me around?

take the 2 newest dumps, compress them into 1 7z file and share this file.
