Excel File Requires Authentication in SSRS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have uploaded an excel file in to SSRS, file browser mode.  Since all of our other reports are hosted here, we want to be able to host a few static excel files.  Users have to authenticate when they login to the SSRS website.  They can run reports just fine.  However, when they click on the excel file and select open, they have to authenticate again.  Is there any way to eliminate this second login?

We are using SSRS 2008R2 Enterprise in native mode with rswindows basic authentication.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Brian,

The issue may be related to the settings of the Windows Basic Authentication in the RSReportServer.config file. When configuring Basic authentication, there are several elements can be specified.

    • The Realm property controls whether the user is authenticated for the entire site or only a portion of the site. In the latter case, if the user attempts to access another portion of the site, the report server will prompt the user for credentials.
    • EnableAuthPersistance property controls whether the report server requires authentication for each client request or only once per connection.

So, I suggest that you check the <Authentication> elements in the RSReportServer.config file and make sure the EnableAuthPersistance property is set to True and the Realm property is not set for only a portion of the site.

Note: Please always back up the RSReportServer.config file before making any modifications to it.

    Hope this helps.
