Visual Studio 2015 stuck in Update mode

  • I was updating the VS2015 setup before trying to change some installation settings, and had a very badly timed powercut.

After I was able to get the computer up and working again, I tried to open VS2015 and it closes down almost instantly after opening the window.

When trying to uninstall it (or running the installer) I get this message:

From what I understand from the message, I have somehow got VS stuck in a position where it thinks the setup updater is always running.

VS2013 still opens and works fine, but I need to open up a Universal App project which only works in 2015 obviously.

What exactly have I done, and how can I fix this?

  • Hi KyleBriggs,

    Thanks for your post.

    >>another steup is alread running, Please wait for it to finish  before trying it again

Generally, the error message occured when you already opened an instance of Visual Stduio.

Please check whether exist  something like vs_community.exe running in task manager? If have, please close it and waiting a while then try to update the VS2015 again.

By the way, try rebooting the machine to make sure any instances are stopped.

    Besst Regards,

    Lake Xiao
