SharePoint add-in Requires Custom Web Browser Protocol Installation. Is it allowed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our SharePoint add-in opens documents using a custom web browser protocol. It works similarly to how MS Office opens docs and how Skype is triggered, but targets PDF, DWG, PSD and other non-MS Office types of documents. If you need more info you can see a video here:

To install this protocol a user must download and run .msi installer. However .msi files are not allowed inside the SharePoint add-in package.

As soon as .msi is prohibited, I wonder if any custom web browser protocols are allowed inside SharePoint at all, because there is no way to install it without .msi or .exe. Or do we just place the .msi on an external web site?
