How to Upgrade SSRS Report Builder Models 1.0 SQL2005 to Report Builder 3.0 SQL2008R2 - error can upload. RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are in the test phase of upgrading our existing SQL2005 SSRS TO SQL2008 R2 SSRS.   We successfully upgraded( in our test envirnonment) and reports all seem to be working.   When trying to go into Report Builder, none of our Model are available to see, the reports ran against the 2005 models all work, but they can not be modified and we can not create any new reports off these models.   Seems like a waste as we have over 200 custom reports created from our 20+ models .   We've search the internet and haven't really found a straight answer on how to upgrade our models to sql2008 r2 (Report Builder 3.0).    We did find something about applying a Cumulative update 5 to fix the issue we are having trying to upload a 2005 model via the report manager as we are getting the 'semantic....error....'  This fix did not appear to help.   Please advise.

  • Hi,

In Reporting Services 2008 and 2008 R2, the ReportBuilder (2.0 and 3.0, respectively) does not run off models like in Reporting Services 2005. The new Report Builders are more like the BIDS designer in Visual Studio. This was done to address concerns that the orignal Report Builder (1.0) was too limited in options it gave the end user.

The good news is that Report Builder 1.0 is still available in the Reporting Services 2008 and 2008 R2 products. By default, the product launches the new Report Builder. Note: You can only have one or the other as the default. Here's a quick summary followed by where to change the setting and what to use for Report Builder 1.0.

SSRS 2005 has Report Builder 1.0.
SSRS 2008 has Report Builder 1.0 and 2.0 (2.0 is the default).
SSRS 2008 R2 has Report Builder 1.0 and 3.0 (3.0 is the default).

You can change the default in Site Settings in the "Custom Report Builder launch URL:" setting.
    Native Mode: /ReportBuilder/ReportBuilder.application
    SharePoint Mode: /_vti_bin/ReportBuilder/ReportBuilder.application

This setting is documented more fully on MSDN at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181194.aspx

    Thanks.
