determine user's current location

    Question

  • How can the user's current location be determined using Bing Maps AJAX Control? I know I saw this somewhere in the documentation but I'm having difficulty finding the example now.

    Thank you

  • You can't determine the user's location using the AJAX control, I'm afraid...  you could retrieve the user's IP address and then use a lookup or web service to guess their approximate location - see http://www.maxmind.com/app/ip-locate for example.

  • Depending on the browser the user uses you can also grab the coordinates from it as some desktop browsers (firefox 3.5) and some mobile browsers have javascript methods to retrieve the users coordinates.

Interesting, but to be useful for my application it would need to work in any major browser. Thanks for the reply.
