Visual Studio 2008 clean uninstall RRS feed

  • Question

  • Last year, on a brand new PC with WinXP (32bits), I installed
    - Visual Studio 2008 Professional
    - MSDN library for Visual Studio 2008 via the setup.exe in the MSDN folder
on the VS 2008 installation media
    - MS Visual C++ 2008 Feature Pack (via VC2008FeaturePack.exe)

Now, I want to replace all that by Visual Studio 2010 Professional

Before doing anyhting, I printed out what my current software overview from
    Start /ControlPanel / AddOrRemovePrograms
there are a bumber of lines containing " ... Visual Studio 2008"

Then, I put in the VS 2008 distribution CD
It gave me a menu, where I could choose "Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008"
then a submenu where I choose "Uninstall MS Visual Studio 2008"
    this took about 10 minutes.
and told me a the end:
MS Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU
Visual Sudio uninstall has completed succesfully

But looking at my software overview now from
    Start /ControlPanel / AddOrRemovePrograms
it seems only two (2) lines have disappeared, and many others about
Visual Studio are still present, such as:
Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 .NET Framework Tools
Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Headers and Libsraries
    3 more of these
Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office

If I look into the Readme.htm file on the VS 2008 DVD, section
    2.2 Uninstalling - 2.2.4. Manual uninstall
    - this lists 24 to 26 packages to uninstall,
so, I have even a lot more that are not uninstalled...

    Why ??

    What should I do now??
I do want a very clean clean-up, before installing MS Visual Studio 2010 !

  • Do you realize that VS 2008 and VS 2010 are designed to be installed side-by-side on the same machine so a dev can use both?

If you really want to completely uninstall VS 2008, you should follow ALL steps in the readme you mention.

  • Hi Ndhertwin,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Second, the list you saw in Readme contains all Visual Studio 2008 components. If you find some software in your Add/Remove Programs list are not contained in Readme list, these components were not been installed accompanied with Visual Studio installation. I recommend you just uninstall the components listed in Readme, because maybe those components will be used by other applications. You can download readme from: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=102508. I also recommend you take a look at this page: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joy/archive/2008/10/21/how-to-remove-visual-studio-2008-manually.aspx

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know.
