  • Application server is simply a SharePoint server running service applications (or most of them), search server is actually the same like application (but is dedicated only to run search service applications).

What do you expect from admin server? just to run central administration? This will be quite expensice as you need a server licence for every server running SharePoint 2010. Central administration can run on the application server without any problems.

  • There is a huge amount of options how to configure such a farm. What features do you expect to be used, how many users do you have? How many sites do you have?

    I would say
    1 SQL Server + SSRS + SharePoint
    1 SharePoint for Search
    1 SharePoint Application Server
    2 SharePoint Front-End with NLB

  • Not really sure what you mean, but having a look at these resources might point you in the right direction:

The basic idea is to create tiers of similar servers, like 2 web servers, 2 application servers and 2 database servers. The 6 server model provides the capabilities to create a fully redundant SharePoint farm. With only 5 servers you can achieve something similar, but you would be using some servers in multiple roles - like a combined web & application server. The 6 server model however is perhaps better balanced for multiple needs.

  • First install SharePoint with following options:

    • Choose the installation you want: Server Farm
    • Server Type: Complete
    • During SharePoint Products configuration wizard select Connect to a server farm: Create a new server farm

Then add application servers by using following options:

    • Choose the installation you want: Server Farm
    • Server Type: Complete
    • During SharePoint Products configuration wizard select Connect to a server farm: Connect to an existing server farm

Configure different features/services on diffent application servers according to your planning and setup NLB.

Hope it will give you an idea about SharePoint Farm installation/configuration.
