How to update SSDT for Visual Studio 2017? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have VS 2017 professional.  The latest version of SSDT seems to be 15.5.2
    Is this the "standalone" version?

Is there a seperate version if your already working with Visual Studio?

Checking my SSDT version within Visual Studio 2017

Help > About, I see this.  Do I have the latest or not?
    SSDT version 15.1.6.

Also, see 2nd image below for the BI project templates I have installed.

    Components installed currently

You have the latest SSDT version and it was added to your existing VS Pro install. SSDT can also be installed in a separate VS 2017 shell if you didn't have VS 2017 Pro, in which case the subtitle would be "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2017 (SSDT)" instead of "Visual Studio Professional 2017".

  • Why then does Visual Studio say version 15.1.6, yet the latest version is 15.5.2?

  • I think I see what the problem is.  I just realized I had the older VS extensions installed for the BI project types.  I seen this notice on the SSDT download page but thought I had removed them long ago.  Guess not.  Once I removed them, the installer started working and i was able to update

    From the SSDT download page:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssdt/download-sql-server-data-tools-ssdt

    Important

Before installing SSDT for Visual Studio 2017 (15.5.2), uninstall the "Microsoft Analysis Services Projects" and "Microsoft Reporting Services Projects" extensions if they are already installed on VS 2017, and close all VS instances.
