vsix file isn't being generated RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to create an entity framework designer extension and following the example from Entity Framework 4 in Action. The book provides an example that is very similar to this one except the book isn't using the entity data model designer extension kit.  My issue is that the vsix file isn't being created when I build the project.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

  • Hi Mike,

The VSIX is used to help deploy your extension for VS2010. I belive the Extension kit helps create the VSIX related files, e.g. vsixmanifest, for you to deploy the code. You can install the VS2010 SDK, and it will install the VSIX project template for you. You can create a VSIX project and use it to deploy your extensions.

More information about VSIX, please check http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff363239.aspx

  • Thanks Yi.  I had installed the sp1 sdk but had to reboot before I could see the project types.

  • Hi Mike,

    Thank you for the update.

VSIX is only a way to deploy your extension and it is not the only way, in fact it only works for VS2010 and later version. You can deploy the extension using general way, e.g. Xcopy deployment by using codebase. More information, about deployment a VSPackage, please check http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb458038.aspx

    Yi
