Unknown Error installing .NET 3.5 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • In my opinion, .NET 2.0 was probably the best and the most bug-free Software produced by MS till date. There would always be additional features that you would always like to be in a product and there would be features that you think should be implemented in a different way.
But I could hardly find anything in .NET 2.0 that I believe should have been this way or that way. Whatever was present in the product was almost perfect (That could be a big Thumbs-up to 2.0, but that would also be a comparative down rating of 3.5).

One good thing about 2.0 setup was that the setup showed that actions it was performing. So, one had a more clear idea of where & probably why the installation failed, if it did. But 3.5 setup is completely obscure and we are not aware of what exactly is the setup doing. It would be helpful if MS makes the setup more verbose as that in 2.0

On tens of my client machines where I have installed .NET 3.5 SP1, I have encountered tens of different problems, where none of them presented any with 2.0. Anyways, I was able to recover from them, and proceed with install by googling out, but I could not find something for the latest I have faced.

.NET 3.5 SP1 full redistributable package is consistently aborting on 3-4 machines during the time, that green Progress bar is on screen (after the initial 2 decompression progress bar, but before the License Agreement acceptance screen).

All that is produced is a log file (which I am pasting below), and some dump on screen which I am not able to copy (and so can not paste that here). It would be great if someone in here could diagonize from the below, any indications of the problem:

(The forum was NOT allowing me paste the file, due to its size. So please download the log file from the following link:)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have tried everything. I tried uninstalling 2.0, which was successful. 3.5 install again failed. I then tried .NET clean-up tool to clean anything left behind the uninstall, still unsuccessful. And I have tried other such tricks that surfaced on top on goggling about this problem

  • Yes, I was able to install .NET 3.5 on clean Windows. Looks like there are problems when upgrading from .NET 2.0.

Anyways, the logs are gone. Sorry about that!!!

  • I believe that I have followed the instructions on that blog. There might be one important thing I may have missed above. I was trying to install it on an XP SP2 machine.
I have mentioned that I was using the full redistributable and that was downloaded from MS downloads only.

  • Hi Rahul

Can you please use the collect tool mentioned at http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx and upload the vslogs.cab for more information?

    Thanks.

  • I wish I could have done that. The systems were critical for client operation, and they were formatted & reinstalled from clean state to work with .NET 3.5 3 days ago.

  • So are you able to install the .NET 3.5 sp1 now?
If not, please run the setup again, when it fails again, then use the collect tool to generate vslogs.cab as a collection of log files.

    Thanks.
