Fatal Microsoft symbol server download error RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hello,

The SYMOPT_FAVOR_COMPRESSED flag for the SymSetOptions function is documented to "favor the compressed file" over any uncompressed symbols however the compressed symbols were removed from the Microsoft symbol server yesterday and symsrv.dll will NOT download the uncompressed symbols when that flag is enabled!?!

The removal of compressed symbols from the Microsoft symbol server has caused well over 200 versions of our program released since 2008 to suddenly stop working...  Why on earth have compressed symbols been removed from the Microsoft symbol server??

Also, why does the SYMOPT_FAVOR_COMPRESSED flag prevent symsrv.dll from downloading uncompressed symbols?

Please restore the compressed symbols or fix the symsrv.dll bug preventing the download of uncompressed symbols... The changes to the symbol server have broken over 200 versions of our software!!!

  • Thanks for the report, we're looking at this now. We made a change late last week to give quicker responses to PD_ and file.ptr requests, but didn't fully realize the impact that change had on this specific symbol option. We’re working on a change that will respond to those requests with 404 instead of 400 which will stop SymSrv from bailing out after a failed PD_ request. We expect the fix to be rolled out later this week.
