SQL Server 2008 R2 Installed on Windows Server 2012 vs Windows Server 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello. I'm aware that SQL Server 2008 R2 is supported on Windows Server 2012 with SP1 or higher. Is anyone currently running SQL 08 R2 on Server 2012? Any noticeable pros or cons vs running on Win Server 2008 R2? Any performance increase from using Win Server 2012? If you were standing up a new SQL 2008 R2 server today, would you build it as Win Server 2008 R2 or Win Server 2012 and why?

Just looking for opinions and thoughts from others.

Answers

  • Hello,

I would choose Windows Server 2012 for the following reasons:

    • Better networking
    • Improvements to ODBC.
    • Improvemts to Hyper-V. Virtual NUMA.
    • More, better and cheaper high availability scenarios. Faster storage validation for clusters. iSCSI Software target is now an in-box feature. Scale-out file server. New vote weight feature for cluster nodes. Dynamic quorums.
    • Faster file server. SMB 2.2.

    Hope this helps.
