Does my game in Directx 3d with no xaml have to scale to the screen size ?

    Question

  • I have written a simple platform game based around 1024 by 768.

On higher res screens I just centre it leaving a space around the game.

Is this OK or do I have to fill the screen ?

The game uses fixed sprite and item sizes with definite gaps between platforms.

So this would be difficult to scale up unless by a factor of 2 or more.

  • What do you mean by OK?

That sounds like a good way to frustrate your users. I'd include sprites for all the standard DPI levels so you can scale up smoothly, and hide any letterboxing of the actual game board by adding a simple graphical background in the unused area. It'd be even better if you could use it for scores, stats, etc.

  • By OK I meant does it break any rules ?

I am running on a 28inch monitor in around 1900 by 1024 and it looks fine.
