  • Hi, I'm trying to install VS 2011 Developer Preview and I'm getting a fatal error when installing, so I searched for the error and found:

It is not the first time I get this error: 'Could not open key' last time I went to HLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Installer/UserData and changed its permission for my user, so it worked out fine, but this time I'm already these register 'owner'

  • I'm using Windows 7.

    Problem solved!

The unaccessible key 'UNKNOWN\Installer\Patches\F05B353F0040A6F37AEDA38235B8F884\SourceList\Media' wasn't in 'HLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Installer\UserData' though there's one key with this name (F05B353F0040A6F37AEDA38235B8F884) in there.

To solve the problem I just searched for the key 'F05B353F0040A6F37AEDA38235B8F884' using regedit's search option and when it found something I tried to open it but regedit said me 'You don't have permission to open this key' (or something like this kk) so I just changed its permissions and it finally worked like a charm.

I tried to locate the key's address now to post here but I wasn't able to find it anymore, I think it was in there just by the setup time.

  • What Windows version are you installing to?

Windows 7 or the Windows 8 Developer Preview are required.
