Open HTML files in browser instead of prompting for download RRS feed

  • Question

  • Users in SharePoint Online create training sessions with the end result being an html document that needs to be reviewed before publication.  Users cannot do anything but download the document which defeats the purpose of reviewing this training material.

This is yet another Dropbox feature that we cannot get past.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Jan Headrick,

In SharePoint on premise server, we could set Browser File Handling to Permissive for users to open html files directly in the browser. But in SharePoint Online, there is no options for this.

For this requirement, I suggest you provide the feedback to the UserVoice. UserVoice is a platform for getting thoughts about Microsoft Office products. SharePoint teams will be listening to your feedback.

  • If you make an .aspx page, with a content editor web part, that points to the HTML file, does it display?

(Your description is too vague to understand what is really happening, and since I don't use DropBox, I can't say I feel the pain, either.)

  • Hello Steve.

Apparently the team uses a vendor who creates these 'packages' and then has the team review the html file.  No real way to have them change it.  Similar concept we used in SharePoint 2007 when we uploaded training videos.  Users clicked on the html file and all the content was tied to it.  Layout below - must be able to open html.  Thought there might be a setting somewhere.

    way to change it.

  • Hi,

Add a page viewer webpart in your site, and point it to your HTML file.

  • SharePoint Online does not support directly rendering the contents from the HTML file.

    1. Rename the html file as .aspx or
    2. Use the content editor and point it to that html file.

  • This is not an option, the file is shared via direct link.  No renaming can happen.  No one is visiting the site at all.  Just viewing a file to approve a training session.

This worked fine in SharePoint 2007.

  • Thanks Linda.  I will do that as well.

If users sync their SharePoint folder, they can then open the HTML files in the browser.  Not ideal for external team members, but it is a work around.

Just a feature we use in SharePoint 2007 which will prohibit 100 % adoption.

    Have a great day.

  • Remember the old days, when web sites use to be able to open html pages?
