[UWP]What drives are included in "Removable Storage" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In Windows 10 universal apps there is the capability flag "Removable Storage". What counts as removable storage? On Windows Phone 10 it seems to be the SD card only. But on WinRT (Surface, notebook) there are USB drives, multiple internal harddrives, CD drives, and so on.

    Regards,

  • From https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/mt270968.aspx:

The removableStorage capability provides programmatic access to files on removable storage, like USB keys and external hard drives.

Note the hardware needs to report to Windows as removable storage first. I have seen USB devices reporting their internal storage as fixed hard drives, probably a firmware bug.

  • And is there a way to find out if a drive is a removable storage? For instance, the user selects a file using a picker. Then I want to determine if the selected file is on a removable or fixed storage.
