KernelBase.dll changed by windows 10 update, now VS2015 is no longer working.

    Question

  • This morning my PC got an update
With bleu screen text that i shouldnt worry about my files would be safe etc, and that new features would be added to windows 10.

But now I got a problem trying to execute code from VS 2015.
I got .net errors (VS2015 halts program execution) with error :

The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
    Exception Info: System.IO.FileNotFoundException

I get these with all external referenced dll's in my project.
I recreated all those references but that didnt solve it, and all those files where there, they where not changed.
As those dlls are from Microsoft SDKs (such as the kinectv2).

Anyway then i opened windows event viewer, under application log, i see the same .net error as VS2015 gives.
But also anotherone directly after it i see now :

Faulting application name: BollenTellerV2.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x56a756ce
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.10586.0, time stamp: 0x5632da1c
    Exception code: 0xe0434352
    Fault offset: 0x000bd8a8
    Faulting process id: 0x143c
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d15f54281059b3
    Faulting application path: D:\Projects\vs2015\MyappV2 - Copy\BollenTellerV2\bin\Release\MyApp.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KERNELBASE.dll
    Report Id: 6d4751bc-8ed5-4fea-8f8f-487feb6e0958
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

So huston i think we got a huge problem here, that silent windows 10 update, disables coders who work with vs2015

  • I reverted windows 10 back to build 10240, instead of  10.0.10586
Visual studios seams to work again.

I'm on the lookout of how to disable windows update on my developer PC now.
Also now office 365 Outlook seams to work fine again now.

I can imagine if people want bleeding edge builds of Windows 10 that one has to take some risks.
I didnt go for risks in my windows 10 settings, and so please MS before you push such new windows 10 versions updates, test that it works.

So my briefly contact with cortana took about 4 hours.
Then she was wiped apparently part of the new build.

  • Hi PGT2008,

Since you have verified the problem is caused by the Windows updates, I suggest you check which updates installed on your computer and then submit this issue to Visual Studio Connect with the updates list.

    https://connect.microsoft.com/visualstudio

Then please sharing the feedback link here, it is benefit to other communities who has the same issue vote and add comments for your feedback. I think the report team experts will evaluate this problem seriously. Thanks for your feedback for the VS products.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei
