VS2015 IDE launching and connections to outside world. Can I turn it all off?

    Question

  • Coming from VS2010, I just completed my VS2015 PRO installation (wow over 16 hours to install, shocking) and I wish to lock down my corporate development machine from ANY outside connectivity.

This is VS2015 startup connected to and remained connected for a certain period.

      TCP    AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:50143  65.52.210.213:443      ESTABLISHED
      TCP    AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:50174  72.21.81.200:443       ESTABLISHED
      TCP    AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:50175  65.55.44.109:443       ESTABLISHED
      TCP    AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:50176  104.45.136.42:443      ESTABLISHED
      TCP    AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:50177  65.55.44.109:443       ESTABLISHED

I don't wish it to even TRY to connect. I feel very vulnerable and abused by Microsoft new "Visual Studio 2015" installation Model to evade my corporate environment and also my development privacy.   I just wish to code, please, in PRIVATE.   Can I turn this all off?   I see a VSHUB in memory. Can I disable this?

  • Hi hector santos,

As far as I know, there are some settings which will check the updates for VS like the following screen shot, is it the option you want to disable? Or it is related to the "Synchronized settings"(it also has this option in the following screen shot).

    >>Can I turn this all off?   I see a VSHUB in memory. Can I disable this?

Maybe you could check that whether it is related to the Diagnostic Tools window, as far as I know, we could disable it under TOOLS->Options->Debugging->General.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi, Thank you for your input.    I disabled all the IDE options, including your suggested ones, diagnostics, updates, all "ping home" stuff and there wasn't a way to disable it.   I had to add a Firewall block on the VSHUBs, however, this doesn't stop the running of VSHUB using our memory resource.  Other articles suggest to delete the VSHUB  folders to stop them being launched.

The only ones left are, I believe, the "Start Page" news streams items updates.   Is there an option to turn off this and make it an manual "news stream refresh/update" thing?

    Thank you.

  • Hi hector santos,

    Thanks for your friendly response.

I just know that we could change the Start page and download content under TOOLS->Options->Environment->Startup.

    For the previous issue:

    >>I had to add a Firewall block on the VSHUBs, however, this doesn't stop the running of VSHUB using our memory resource.

At first, I feel that it is the VS diagnostic debugging tool, but it seems that the name of it is "VsHub.exe", am I right? Actually I could repro this issue in my side, I also couldn't disable it in my side.

Other members also met the similar issue before:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/33837163/visual-studio-2015-vshub-is-spamming-fiddlerBut it seems that no direct solution for this issue now, to get the issue confirmed and diagnose by product team, would you please create connect report for it? You will get email notification for update.http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/CreateFeedback.aspx

  • Thanks Jack.   The best way to avoid it, is to keep the IDE up and running all the time with the Start Page disabled.  It minimizes the connects now.  I remember with VS2010 I had to deleted a DLL file but I don't wish to go thru that process of finding and deleting stuff like it was suggested in article. Thanks again,
