File system recognition RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to detect a file system type. Windows does not support this type because its encrypted.
I want to disable the format message form Windows system (partmgr.sys or disk.sys).

Is a mini file system driver the right way to do this?

  • First there is no such thing as a mini file system, there are file system mini-filters, legacy file system filters and file systems.  File system are not recognized by partmgr or disk.sys but instead have their own recognition model.  The article http://www.osronline.com/article.cfm?id=79 is old but explains the basics.

If you file system is a standard windows file system that is encrypted, you need a way to decrypt those pieces needed to recognized the file system under any condition.  If this is a unique file system you need a recognizer and your own file system to support it.  Be aware file system are some of the most complex software in Windows.

  • I can already decrypt my file system. Its a truecrypt generated volume. When i insert the device, windows want to format it. Now i want disable this message.

My Idea was to detect to volume due a mini file system filter or file system filter to detect the volume/partition and prevent windows from generating this message window.

Now im investigating  in the article you refer. Thank you.
