Visual Studio 2011 error in blank application

    Question

  • Hi, I installed Visual Studio 2011 Beta and Windows 8 consumer preview and tried to start a metro app.

    But I encountered an exception cause a breakpoint in the begin when I start to debug a sample PortableDeviceCPP which downloaded from msdn code gallery.

    And I tried another sample D2DBasicAnimation it didn't happen this time. Then I created a new blank Application project it happened again.

    I found out that the exception occur in App.g.h

    int main(Platform::Array<Platform::String^>^ args)
    {
    	Application::Start(ref new ApplicationInitializationCallback([](ApplicationInitializationCallbackParams^ params) {
    		auto app = ref new App();
    		}));
    }

    It seems unable to new an App object.

    There is some error message:

    DXX32: Warn: Registry value too long: MainVideo_SET in SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001\UMD

    Invalid parameter passed to C runtime function.

    No Source Available

    There is no source code available for the current location

    By the way, the app icon created in the desktop can run normally, so it's only debug error.

    If the project doesn't contain App.xaml, it works well too.

    Does anyone run into the same problem like me? I just want to build a application from scratch.

    Thank YOU!!

  • Is this a C++ metro app project? Did you get those errors when you F5 on a newly created project?

    Friday, March 09, 2012 12:09 AM
  • Yes, it's a C++ metro app project. I got there errors when I press F5 on a new project. I found that I get the same error on C# project.

  • Couple questions:

    • Are you able to build the project without errors?
    • Can you copy and paste the F5 errors you're getting?

  • 1. I am able to build the project without errors

    2. some error messages as following:

    Application5.exe has triggered a breakpoint.

    If there is a handler for this exception, the program may be safely continued. => this happens in the begin

  • This could be a setup issue since you're hitting the same problem with C# projects. Can you try to repair Visual Studio and see if that fixes the problem?

    Thanks.

  • I've tried to repair VS 2011 but it's no use.

    my windows 8 preview is checked version (8250.0.WINMAIN_WIN8BETA.120217-1520_X64CHK_CLIENT_EN-US-HB1_CCS_X64CHK_EN-US_DV5.iso)

    and VS 2011 beta (en_visual_studio_11_premium_beta_x86_dvd_808057.iso)

    Does this matter?

    Wednesday, May 02, 2012 8:42 AM
  • I experience the same error (W7x64 with 32bit C++ app via VS2008, using DX9).

    Looks like this case is similar to: http://devgurus.amd.com/message/1281157

    and it is related to AMD video drivers.

  • Now that the Release Preview is out, can you give it a try and see if you can still repro the same issue?

    You may find info about how to obtain the Release Preview on here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

    Thanks

  • I am currently reaching out to AMD to see if we can work with them to investigate this issue, as it appears to be related to AMD video drivers as mentioned previously.  Thank you for reporting this issue!

  • Stephen214,

    Can you tell me which video driver version you are currently running?  Go to device manager, expand "Display Adapters", and right click on the AMD GPU.  Click Properties, then the Driver tab, and let me know what the "Driver Version" number is.  Also, if you could provide the graphics adapter model, that would be great.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Stephen.

    I'm unfortunately unable to reproduce the breakpoint issue, however do get the registry value too long debug spew, which has since been fixed in a more recent driver.  I'll keep trying to debug the breakpoint (assuming it is indeed related to the video driver) -- any other information you have on repro steps would be useful.  For example, does this occur with an empty from scratch project using a C++ Metro template, C#, or both?

    Here is the Output Window from a C++ Blank Metro template. The other one was from from C#. Same thing happens in both.

  • In my case, most of the same modules are being loaded but I don't get the same messages other than the DXX one (which is clearly the AMD driver).  For example, I don't see the CRenderTarget messages or any of the XAML trace messages.

    One thing that seems consistent is that before each breakpoint is triggered, GlobalFree is being called with a locked object.  Can you send a callstack when the breakpoint is hit?  I'd like to see what's on the stack at that point, and I may need to bring Microsoft back in to take a look at this one as I'm not sure it's an AMD issue.  You can also drop me a note at b-robinm (at) microsoft.com.

    Thanks!
